Baby goats!

After anticipating their arrival since early June, the kids are here.  It has been a bit of a rocky start, including:

  1. Mama goat had triplets, but only two of the kids survived.
  2. The surviving kids were very floppy, having a great deal of difficulty standing, and needed help getting on and staying on mama’s teats at first.  Fortunately, this improved with time, and a dose of selenium.
  3. Mama goat did not pass the placenta, resulting in a uterine infection.  She got pretty sick, but is now an antibiotics and on the mend.

Today, having weathered the rough patch, the kids are thriving (and are acting like typical baby goat “jumping beans”), Mama goat is slowly getting back to normal, and I expect to be able to finally sleep well tonight!  Now that things are going in the right direction, I wanted to celebrate our new arrivals, but after a few stressed out days, and with lots to be done with the bees, the garden and preparing for my first day selling honey at the Dexter farmers market this weekend,  I thought I would fill this blog with pictures, rather than words!  Enjoy!

Mama keeps watch over the little ones.
Uncle Ichabod, and sisters Luna and Gaia look over and through the fence to see the new babies.
Sleeping baby goats
The baby goats like to sleep touching each other.
The kids exploring outside the barn for the first time.
Finally starting to feel better, Izzie munches on leaves while the babies get a meal as well.
The day Izzie finally felt well enough to bring the kids and join the goat walk. She wore out quickly, but it was still a huge improvement from earlier in the week!
They are now goat walk experts.
Best buddies!
